Build things. Ask why. Own the question.

We welcome enquiries from prospective Ph.D., MPhil, undergraduate and postdoctoral researchers who want to understand physical systems deeply.

What working here involves

Most projects involve building or modifying an experimental setup. Depending on the question, that may mean mechanical design, fabrication, electronics, instrumentation, microscopy, fluidics or magnetic systems. Modelling and simulation help explain observations and guide the next experiment.

You do not need to arrive with every technique. You should be willing to learn practical skills, troubleshoot patiently and engage with the physical system.

The research mindset

A good fit is someone who enjoys reading beyond a narrow task, questioning assumptions and designing measurements that could change their explanation. We value ambitious questions, careful evidence and increasing independence.

Students receive substantial discussion and guidance while progressively taking responsibility for the literature, the research question, experimental decisions and the argument supported by their results.

How to get in touch

Email a concise research statement, your CV, a transcript where relevant, and one or two papers or projects that shaped your interests. Explain which question interests you, what you learned from your own work and why this approach to research appeals to you.
